Composer of the Month
Tchaikovsky
Quick and Interesting Facts:
Full Name: Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky
Born: May 7, 1840 (Votkinsk, Russia)
Died: November 6, 1893 (Saint Petersburg, Russia)
Period of Music: Romantic
Tchaikovsky showed a great talent for music and started piano lessons at the age of 5. When he was 9, he was able to read the music as well as his teacher... yet somehow his piano teacher did not believe he was talented.
"[Tchaikovsky] once said, "I started to compose as soon as I knew what music was." That's true. Tchaikovsky was just four years old when he composed a song about his mother" (Great Composers, 2013).
Tchaikovsky had an inexplicable fear while conducting: this was that his head would fall off. He would conduct with the baton in one hand while holding tightly to his chin with the other hand.
"Tchaikovsky wrote interesting observations about other composers in his diaries. For instance...When [he] was 32 years old and Saint- SaÃns was 40, they each lived out a secret ambition. They became ballet dancers. They created and later performed in their own two-man ballet. No audience was invited. They just had great fun" (Great Composers, 2013).
"The "1812 Overture," written in 1880, commemorates the Russian victory against the invading armies of Napoleon. The original score was set to be performed outdoors... and calls for 16 genuine cannon shots" (Selki).
